On this anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe vs. Wade (1973), all dioceses of the United States shall observe a “a day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion” (GIRM, no. 373). The Mass “For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life” (#48/1A or B) from Masses and Prayers for Various Needs and Occasions may be celebrated with white vestments, or the Mass “for the Preservation of Peace and Justice” (#30) with violet vestments. Readings from the Mass “For Giving Thanks to God for the Gift of Human Life” (the Lectionary for Mass Supplement 947A-947E) or the Mass “For Peace and Justice” (Lectionary for Mass (vol. IV) nos. 887-891) should be used.
This year the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord falls on a Sunday and takes precedence over the 4th Sunday in Ordinary Time. You will see in the Ordo and the Roman Missal that there are two forms for the entrance: The Procession and the Solemn Entrance. The Roman Missal indicates that the solemn entrance is to be used “whenever a procession cannot take place.” Pastors should use their judgment with regard to choosing the procession or solemn entrance at each particular Mass but might plan to use the Procession for at least one of the Sunday Masses in each parish. Please note that the blessing of the candles takes place at every Mass regardless of the choice of form of entrance.
